The Precipice Trail: A Rewarding Challenge for Experienced Hikers
About the Precipice Trail
The Precipice Trail is one of the most rewarding hikes in the park for strong and experienced hikers who aren't afraid of heights. This challenging 3.2-mile round-trip route climbs 1,000 feet in nearly a mile. Hikers scramble up Champlain Mountain’s face, navigating over boulders and using iron rungs and ladders fixed to exposed cliffs. The summit offers unparalleled views over Sand Beach, Bar Harbor, and Frenchman Bay. For the descent, hikers return via the steep granite path of the North Ridge of Champlain Trail.
Considering the Challenge
However, the trail isn't suitable for everyone. If you're unsure about your mental and physical readiness, recent travelers recommend trying the Beehive Trail first. This strenuous but shorter trail on the park's east side can serve as a good test. Additionally, avoid hiking the Precipice Trail after rain, as it can be slippery with some sections offering no margin for error. To avoid congestion, start your hike early in the morning.
Trailhead and Accessibility
The trailhead and parking area are located north of Sand Beach on Park Loop Road. Note that trail closures often occur from mid-March to mid-August to protect nesting peregrine falcons. It's best to check with a park ranger or on the National Park’s website for the latest information.
