Insider Tip

Stroll through the property during your visit, and don't miss the gazebo overlooking Turnagain Arm for the best views. You might even spot beluga whales during tide changes. – Erin Kirkland

Location and Overview

Situated approximately 50 miles south of Anchorage at the scenic end of Turnagain Arm, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center spans 200 acres. This facility provides a home for animals and birds that can no longer survive in the wild. Open year-round, visitors are guaranteed to see Alaska's iconic wildlife, including black and brown bears, wolves, moose, musk ox, lynx, foxes, and a herd of wood bison.

Visitor Experience

Walking and Driving Tours

A 1.5-mile loop walkway guides visitors towards Turnagain Arm and back, allowing them to walk or drive to the animal enclosures. The behind-the-scenes tour is highly recommended and worth the additional fee. Staff regularly host feeding events, providing an opportunity to learn more about Alaska's native animals.

Seasonal Shuttle

If walking isn't your preference, a seasonal shuttle service is available to transport visitors between enclosures. This service is particularly helpful during adverse weather conditions.

Amenity Highlights

The center is a convenient stop midway between Anchorage and Seward, featuring picnic areas and ample space to stretch your legs. There is also a small gift shop and snack shack on-site, adding to the visitor experience. Previous visitors have praised the center's accessibility and scenic beauty.

Admission and Location Details

Admission prices are as follows: $20 for adults, $18 for active duty military, $16 for youth aged 5 to 17, and free for children aged 4 and younger. The center is located along the Seward Highway (Alaska Route 1) at mile 47. To reach the center, turn west (right if you're heading southbound, left if northbound) and proceed to the admission kiosk.

Operating Hours

Hours of operation vary by season. From May to August, the center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. For a complete list of hours, please visit the center's official website.
