Historical Background of Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse
Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse has a rich history that dates back to 1824 when Congress allocated $6,500 for the construction of a 30-foot, land-based tower. The lighthouse was first illuminated in November 1875. A century later, in 1975, it earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse was manned by the Coast Guard until 1986, marking its transition as the last lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay to be fully automated. Notably, it is the only screw-pile lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay still in its original location. Presently, the lighthouse is owned by the City of Annapolis and managed by the United States Lighthouse Society.
