Balanced Rock: A Geological Marvel
A Natural Wonder
This iconic, 128-foot boulder, precariously perched on top of a thin pedestal of rock, is one of the park's top sights. Despite appearing as though it might topple over, the rock is securely attached to its eroding pedestal of Dewey Bridge mudstone.
Visiting Balanced Rock
Balanced Rock is easily visible from the road. However, many recent visitors recommend parking and taking the short trail (less than half a mile) to the rock's base for a closer view. This location is particularly popular with photographers, who suggest arriving at sunset. During this time, the setting sun imparts a deep, red-orange hue to the rocks, enhancing the visual experience.
Location and Amenities
Situated less than 10 miles north of the park entrance, Balanced Rock is conveniently accessible. There is a picnic area opposite the rock along a gravel road, which includes a covered canopy and a vault toilet. Access to Balanced Rock is covered by park admission.
