Thomas Wolfe Memorial: A Literary Landmark in Asheville

Introduction

One of the greatest American literary minds of the early 20th century, Thomas Wolfe, drew immense inspiration from his time in Asheville. This influence is particularly evident in his historic downtown Asheville home. Built in 1883, the house has undergone multiple ownership changes and was once operated by Wolfe’s mother as a boarding house. Wolfe’s first and most famous novel, “Look Homeward, Angel,” pays tribute to his time in this house and in Asheville.

Visitors can tour the house to gain a profound understanding of how the author's childhood home shaped his work. An attached visitor center features a gift shop and an exhibit dedicated to Wolfe’s life and achievements.

Visitor Experience

Visitors to the home not only gain unique insights into Thomas Wolfe’s life but also into the city of Asheville itself, as it is a North Carolina State Historic Site. Even those who are not familiar with Wolfe prior to the tour often find the experience enjoyable and enriching.

The Thomas Wolfe Memorial, also known as The Thomas Wolfe House, is conveniently located in downtown Asheville between the Asheville Community Theatre and the Renaissance Asheville Downtown Hotel.

Operating Hours

The house operates from Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily tours are available at half past the hour, with the last tour starting at 4:30 p.m.

Ticket Information

Tickets are priced at $5 for adults and $2 for students aged 7 to 17. For more details, including a downloadable Wolfe-themed walking tour of downtown Asheville, visit the Thomas Wolfe Memorial website.
