Overview of Stone Mountain Park

Spread across 3,200 acres, Stone Mountain Park boasts a variety of attractions. The Confederate Memorial Carving is the most famous (and sometimes controversial) part of the park. This carving, the largest high relief sculpture in the world, depicts Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, and Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The entire carved surface measures 3 acres, which is larger than a football field. If the carving doesn't intrigue you, consider the park's other attractions.

Attractions and Activities

Additional Facilities

The park offers a songbird preserve, a cable car ride, a scenic railroad, a miniature golf course, and two full-size 18-hole courses. There is also a seasonal outdoor park with life-size dinosaur replicas and a seasonal indoor dinosaur-themed play area. A group of homes built between 1793 and 1895 are open for tours. For those who prefer the wilderness, the park has hiking trails, picnic areas, and other recreational attractions. Summer evenings feature the Lasershow Spectacular, which projects images representing the South onto the mountain’s carving and the night sky.

Visitor Tips

Previous visitors praised the park's ample kid-friendly amenities but noted that weather conditions can significantly affect your experience. For instance, high winds may prevent cable car rides to the top of the mountain for safety reasons. Some former travelers also mentioned long lines and the high cost of items and activities. Touring the park by Segway is another popular option and is considered one of the best ways to explore Atlanta.

Transportation

MARTA does not operate routes to and from the park. For more information, visit the park's website.
