Introduction to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Named for its co-founder, Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson (wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson), the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is an essential destination for flower enthusiasts. Together with Helen Hayes, Lady Bird Johnson co-founded the center to educate the public about the benefits of planting native plants, significantly impacting gardening habits in central Texas.

Features and Attractions

Plant Collection

The center boasts North America's most diverse collection of Texas native plants. Visitors can marvel at more than 900 species of Texan flora, including bluebonnets and evening primrose, flourishing across more than 280 acres of gardens.

Trails and Observation

Besides the gardens, you can explore walking trails and an observation tower. The 16-acre arboretum is another highlight, showcasing 50 types of oaks found in Texas.

Family Fun

For younger visitors, the Luci and Ian Family Garden offers play structures and a maze, ensuring an engaging visit for all ages.

Visitor Experience

Reviewers note that the center is beautiful throughout the year, but the spring and early summer months offer the best chance to see flowers in full bloom. They recommend allocating one to two hours for your visit and encourage bringing children to explore the gardens.

Practical Information

Operating Hours

Located about 10 miles southwest of the city center, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is generally open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For July and August, the hours are adjusted to 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission Prices

Admission costs $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $8 for children aged 5 to 17. Children aged 4 and under can enter for free. Note that segments of the center, such as the gift shop and cafe, close earlier.

Transportation and Accessibility

Due to a lack of convenient public transportation options, driving or taking a taxi to the center is recommended. Fortunately, parking is free. For additional details, visit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's official website.
