Discovering Compass Harbor: A Hidden Gem in Bar Harbor
On a peak summer day, when the town and park are teeming with visitors, Compass Harbor offers a serene escape. This small section of the park is conveniently located an easy mile-long walk south along Main Street from downtown Bar Harbor. Due to its lack of prominent signage and a small parking area, many visitors overlook this treasure.
The Historical Significance of Compass Harbor
Compass Harbor was once the residence of George Dorr, who is revered as the Father of Acadia. Known as Old Farm, you can still find the remnants of Dorr's estate along the 0.8-mile Compass Harbor Trail. This trail wends through a forested area before reaching a picturesque coastline along Frenchman Bay. You'll discover spur trails leading to the waterfront and, as you explore, you can imagine what Dorr's estate was like during its prime, with features like the cottage foundation, stone steps down to the water, and the remains of a saltwater pool.
Visitor Experiences
Recent visitors have thoroughly enjoyed this easy hike. They explored tide pools, climbed over rocks, and marveled at the breathtaking shoreline views. The site's seclusion and rich history were greatly appreciated, offering a unique and tranquil experience.
Tips for Visiting
Although there is some interpretive signage on-site, previous visitors advised watching park videos about Old Farm and downloading an informative app before visiting. This helps in understanding the historical context and maximizes the enjoyment of your visit.
