Exploring Breckenridge's Hiking Trails
While Breckenridge is best known for its ski slopes, its hiking trails are equally delightful. The area offers hikes suitable for all levels, but it's worth giving yourself a few days to adjust to the altitude before attempting a more challenging hike.
Cucumber Gulch: A Gentle Introduction
Cucumber Gulch, which runs alongside Breckenridge's Cucumber Gulch Nature Preserve, is an easy hike with approximately 150 feet in elevation gain. The trail stretches a little more than 2 miles round-trip. Along the way, hikers will enjoy breathtaking views of the Tenmile Range and a variety of wildflowers. You might even spot some wildlife such as moose and foxes. The trail can be accessed from the parking lot of the Breckenridge Nordic Center.
McCullough Gulch: For the Experienced Hiker
McCullough Gulch is designed for more experienced hikers who are acclimated to the elevation, as it involves a rise of 810 feet in a nearly 3-mile round-trip hike. The rewards for your efforts include several waterfalls and a stunning lake located at Quandary Peak. The trailhead is accessible via Forest Road No. 85, also known as McCullough Gulch Road, approximately 11 miles south of Breckenridge.
Additional Information
Visitors can purchase a hard copy map of the area's hiking trails at the Breckenridge Welcome Center, located at 203 South Main Street. The proceeds from map sales go towards maintaining the trails. All trails are free to access and are typically best traversed between May and October. For more information, visit the Breckenridge Tourism Office website.
