Ocean Avenue is the beating heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea. This one-mile, mostly flat road stretches from the town center down to Carmel Beach. Although it can become crowded in high season, numerous adjacent pathways and alleys offer peaceful alternatives for exploration.

Walking the Avenue

A round-trip walk will take approximately 40 minutes if you start at one end by Highway 1 and continue all the way to Carmel Beach and back. Walking the entirety of the road will lead you into more residential areas, but for a shorter option, you can start midway at Junipero Street in the middle of the town's commercial area. Whether you choose the full route or a shorter version, Ocean Avenue is perfect for window-shopping or enjoying a meal.
