Introduction to Butterfly World
Butterfly World, the largest butterfly house on Earth and the first of its kind in the United States, has been in operation since 1986. It boasts more than 20,000 live butterflies. Developed by Ronald Boender, a former electrical engineer with a passion for butterflies, Butterfly World emerged as a landmark attraction. Boender's "Bring Butterflies Back" campaign in 1988 led to the creation of thousands of new butterfly habitats and increased butterfly populations across North America. Visitors to Butterfly World can admire more than 50 butterfly species at any one time, as well as interact with tropical birds and feed lorikeets.
Visitor Experience
Located in Coconut Creek, about 15 miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale, Butterfly World is an excellent destination for children. Visitors often describe it as a beautiful and unique place to spend an afternoon, with butterflies flying all around. Feeding birds in the lorikeet enclosure is highlighted as a memorable experience. While outside food is not permitted within Butterfly World, there are designated picnic benches outside the entrance where you can enjoy your lunch. Additionally, two outdoor cafes are available on the premises offering snacks and drinks.
Hours of Operation
Butterfly World is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Final ticket sales occur daily at 4 p.m., with the butterfly flight area and lorikeet encounter closing at 4:30 p.m.
