Introduction to Schwabacher Landing

Schwabacher Landing, once a popular starting point for anglers and rafters on the Snake River, still boasts some of the most stunning views of the Tetons, according to recent visitors. Despite the river's course change, the magnificent vistas remain as impressive as ever.

Getting to Schwabacher Landing

Location and Directions

Located off U.S. Highway 89/26/191, the turn for Schwabacher Landing is approximately 5 miles north of Moose Junction and the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center. Follow Schwabacher Landing Road, which starts paved but turns to gravel after a few hundred yards, continuing for 1 mile down to the Snake River. The road concludes at a parking lot where you can find Teton views.

Hiking for Iconic Views

While there are views from the parking lot, the iconic Teton views are accessible via a hiking trail starting at the lot's north end. The trail leads about half a mile to two wooden benches at a beaver pond that mirrors the main Teton peaks. For those who prefer a shorter walk, earlier spots on the trail also offer excellent reflections of the Tetons.

Wildlife and History at Schwabacher Landing

Schwabacher Landing, named after Albert Schwabacher, a San Francisco businessman who purchased a Jackson Hole ranch in 1927 and enjoyed fishing on the Snake River, offers more than just beautiful scenery. Visitors might encounter moose, beavers, beaver dams, lodges, and ponds.

Practical Information for Visitors

Entrance Fees and Accessibility

Although Schwabacher Landing is within Grand Teton National Park boundaries, it is located in an area that does not require the park's entrance fee. The road to Schwabacher Landing typically opens from mid-May until mid-October, weather permitting, as snow can keep it closed the rest of the year.

Best Times to Visit

Unlike many other trailheads and sites in Grand Teton National Park, which are best visited early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds, Schwabacher Landing is most crowded at sunrise and sunset. Therefore, mid-afternoon is the ideal time to visit if you prefer fewer people around. A vault toilet is available for use in the parking lot at the end of the road.
