Grotto Falls Hike Overview
Located along the Trillium Gap Trail – off the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail – Grotto Falls is a nearly 3-mile, out-and-back hike that runs behind a 25-foot waterfall. It's the only waterfall in the park where a trail passes behind it, making for a special up-close experience. The dirt trail winds through a cool mountain cove environment of old-growth forest. The path can get muddy after rainfall, and the trail crosses several streams, so be prepared for slippery conditions.
Trail Conditions
Many recent visitors said the trail is well-maintained and manageable, even with kids in tow. However, several hikers also commented on the initial uphill climb and the stream crossings, which can be very slick, so it's recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes. All visitors were impressed with the beauty of the waterfall and mentioned it was an ideal place for photos. Reviewers also note that parking is limited, and traffic can get backed up on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, so try to visit during off-peak hours or schedule a shuttle.
