Introduction
A visit to Hilo's 'Akaka Falls State Park involves a short (0.4-mile), low-intensity hike in northeastern Hawai'i. The trek rewards visitors with two stunning waterfalls – the cascading Kahuna Falls and the spectacular 'Akaka Falls, for which the park is named.
Trail Details
The less than half-mile, flat, paved loop trail is more of a walk than a hike, making it accessible for almost everyone, although there are some stairs. Many of the best Hawaii tours also include this park, allowing you to avoid venturing to the area on your own.
Hours of Operation
Located off Highway 220, at the end of 'Akaka Falls Road about 15 miles north of Hilo, the park is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Ticket Information
Entrance fees are $5 per person, and parking costs an additional $10. Restrooms and water fountains are available on-site. For those interested only in viewing the beautiful 'Akaka Falls and not Kahuna Falls, it is recommended to take the footpath on the left (south) side. Visit the Hawaii State Park's website for more information.
