Overview of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Located roughly 10 miles east of Waikiki, the family-friendly Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the top destinations for snorkeling with exotic fish and marine life. It also serves as a state park and is uniquely positioned within a volcanic cone, providing natural protection from wind and waves.

How to Get There

To reach Hanauma Bay, you can either take an Uber or drive yourself, with parking costing $3. Note that tour buses are not allowed to enter the park, and the parking lot tends to fill up quickly.

Pricing

Entrance to the park is $25. Children 12 and under, active military, and kama'aina (Hawaiian residents) enter for free with a state ID. Tickets must be reserved online and paid for in advance through the Honolulu Parks & Recreation website. Your admission fee includes a tram ride between the top of the park and the bay.

Amenities

Visitors can rent snorkeling gear on-site or bring their own. The park also offers restrooms, a snack bar, and a gift shop for your convenience.

Operating Hours

Hanauma Bay opens at 6:45 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m., with the last entry at 2 p.m. Please note that the park is closed every Monday and Tuesday.

Additional Information

Safety Video

First-time visitors are required to watch a mandatory safety video, which lasts about 10 minutes.

Prohibited Items

Alcoholic beverages and large coolers are not permitted within the park.

Essentials

Since the park offers limited shade, be sure to bring reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water.
