Historic Significance and Features
Completed in 1882, 'Iolani Palace is a historic 10-room house, museum, and National Historic Landmark that chronicles the reigns of King Kalakaua and his sister, Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawaii's last monarchs. It stands as the only official state royal residence located in the U.S.
Architectural and Cultural Highlights
The palace boasts numerous opulent features, including a grand Hawaiian koa wood staircase, portraits of Hawaiian royalty, royal thrones, and decorative objects sourced from around the globe. It's a visual feast that offers a deep dive into Hawaii's royal heritage.
Visitor Guidelines
While the palace is a fascinating destination, it is not ideal for young children. For visitors bringing children younger than 5, it is mandatory to secure them in a front-held child carrier or use a palace-provided stroller throughout the visit. Additionally, all visitors are required to wear cloth booties to protect the palace's historic floors.
Location
'Iolani Palace is conveniently located next to the iconic gold and black statue of King Kamehameha in downtown Honolulu.
