The Historic Florida Theatre
First opened in 1927, the Florida Theatre now showcases more than 150 cultural and entertainment events annually. Similar to other theaters constructed in the 1920s, including the Tampa Theatre, which was designed by the same interior design studio a year earlier in 1926, the Florida Theatre has a lavish interior.
Architectural Splendor
Built in the Mediterranean Revival-style, the theater impresses travelers with its terrazzo and tile floors, amber glass light fixtures and chandeliers, terracotta exterior ornamentation, decorative columns, and glass and copper entrance doors. When it first opened, the venue also boasted the second-largest Wurlitzer organ in the world.
Visitor Impressions
Recent visitors appreciate the beautiful architecture and say that it's an historic gem with comfortable seating and great acoustics. They also mention that there is not a bad seat in the house. However, based on their positive comments, they must not have encountered “J” during their visit. The Florida Theatre is rumored to be haunted by a man named “J,” and possibly some other friendly ghosts.
Location and Ticket Information
The Florida Theatre is located in downtown Jacksonville. Performance times vary and you can purchase tickets online, over the phone, or at the box office in person. For more information about upcoming events, visit the theater's website.
