Union Station Stories
Don't miss the Union Station Stories exhibit on Mezzanine levels 2 and 3, where you'll find tales of famous travelers like Walt Disney alongside heartfelt stories of locals bidding farewell to WWII soldiers or getting engaged beneath the iconic clock. – Sage Scott
History of Union Station
Kansas City's beaux arts Union Station was built in 1914, welcoming its first trains in early November. Notably, in 1921, all five Allied commanders of World War I arrived by train at Union Station for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Liberty Memorial, a monument honoring World War I veterans located just across from the station. In 1945, Union Station reached its peak as a transportation hub, with more than 678,000 passengers – many of them returning World War II service members – passing through its halls.
Union Station shut down in the 1980s and almost faced demolition multiple times. However, it reopened in 1999 following a three-year, $250 million revitalization project. Since then, it has drawn tourists from around the world with its stunning chandeliers and 95-foot ceilings.
