It's common to see Hawaiian monk seals sleeping and sunning themselves in the sand; do not be alarmed, they are perfectly OK. Be sure to stay 100 feet away from these endangered creatures (you can still get some great photos). – Jill Schildhouse
Po'ipu Beach Park Overview
Po'ipu Beach Park is popular with both residents of and visitors to Kaua'i. This small shoreline, situated on the south side, appeals to many types of beachgoers thanks to its golden sands, calm waters, and convenient location in the heart of the Po'ipu resort area.
Activities and Attractions
Sun seekers can easily kick back, relax, and lay out for hours between the palm trees, while those with children needn't worry about big waves interrupting a family swim. Those looking for a little more adventure can enjoy bodyboarding (the beach features small waves) and snorkeling.
Diverse Swimming Environments
Po'ipu's versatility can be attributed to Nukumoi Point, a tombolo that sits in the middle of the beach, which affords two types of swimming environments. Little kids can wade around the left side's shallow, calm waters, while more advanced swimmers and snorkelers explore the open bay on the right side.
Wildlife at Po'ipu Beach Park
If you visit during the right time of year, you can get an eyeful of local wildlife. From December to April, you may be able to spot humpback whales out at sea. Turtles are often glimpsed here. The downside to Po'ipu's popularity is there's very little chance for privacy, especially in peak travel season.
Traveler Reviews and Tips
Recent travelers agreed that Po'ipu is a beach worth visiting, especially if you're taking a family vacation. Those traveling with kids were quite complimentary of the safe swimming conditions as well as the adjacent grassy beach park, which features picnic tables, benches, and pavilions perfect for parties and family gatherings. There's also a playground.
Wildlife Viewing and Safety
Other beachgoers were particularly thrilled watching the monk seals and turtles swim ashore, though cautioned getting too close. Some said lifeguards keep watch over the wildlife just as much as swimmers. Despite all its perks, some travelers found the beach to be too crowded and recommended arriving early in the day to secure a spot.
Visitor Information
There are no set hours for Po'ipu Beach Park; however, it is not advised to swim at night or anytime a lifeguard is not present. You can find Poipu Beach Park in the Poipu Beach resort area, which features a variety of hotels, restaurants, and shopping options, on Kaua'i's south side.
