Introduction to the Hip District
Key Highlight: Locals consider the Hip District to have some of the best shopping in town and find the offerings to be more interesting and unique than what you’ll find downtown.
Laguna Beach is a paradise, and not just because of the postcard-perfect views and beaches. Serious shoppers will adore the wealth of interesting and independent boutiques scattered around the town, which make it a must-visit destination.
The Evolution of Shopping in Laguna Beach
While many boutiques are downtown near Main Beach, historically, most shopping occurred about a mile south, around Blue Bird Canyon and South Coast Highway. Today, this area is recognized as the HIP District, standing for “Historic and Interesting Places.”
About the Hip District
The neighborhood spans from Anita Street to Bluebird Canyon on the Pacific Coast Highway, just two blocks north of the beach. In the Hip District, you'll discover 45 retail shops, 25 restaurants, art galleries, a bookstore, florists, jewelry stores, day spas, workout studios, consignment stores, and more.
Accommodation Options
Notably, the district is home to several hotels, including the Surf & Sand Resort Laguna Beach, which ranks among the city’s top-rated accommodations.
Historic Buildings
As you explore the district, make sure to visit historic buildings like the Hotel La Casa del Camino, The Old Pottery Place, and The English Garden. These landmarks date back to Laguna’s earliest days and add a rich sense of history to your shopping experience.
Visitor Experience
Visitors appreciate the unique shops and the less crowded atmosphere compared to downtown. However, be aware that depending on the time of your visit, street parking can be limited.
Hours & Admission
There is no fee to visit the Hip District. While there are no set district-wide hours, each business has its own operating schedule.
