Introduction
Nicknamed "the Yosemite of Southern California," Malibu Creek State Park spans over 8,000 acres of lush greenery and scenic trails that meander along streams, plains, and sycamore forests. This area, originally inhabited by the Chumash people and later used for fishing and hunting, is now a popular destination for various outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, rock climbing, birdwatching, camping, and kayaking. The park even features a volcanic swimming hole.
Trails and Activities
Trail Options
The park features a variety of trails, from easy 1.5-mile treks to more challenging 3.4-mile paths. Detailed maps and information about these trails are available online. One of the most popular trails is the Crags Road trail, which leads to the set of the television series "M*A*S*H." This trail remains a favorite among recent visitors; however, bridge access to this site can be closed depending on the weather, so it is advisable to check the status beforehand.
Guided Walks
For television and film enthusiasts, the park offers monthly guided walks that cover the park's nature, wildlife, and filming history. Dates for these walks can be found on the park's Programs page.
Hours
Malibu Creek State Park is open daily from dawn to dusk. The visitor center is available to guests on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
Parking
The park's main entrance is situated approximately 8 miles from Malibu Pier and 4 miles south of Highway 101 on Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon Road. The most common location for parking is the Main Trailhead Parking Lot (also known as the Lower Parking Lot). Parking fees are $3 per hour or $12 per day. Visitors are advised to stick to marked paths to avoid encounters with snakes and ticks and to wear sturdy shoes to prevent tripping on loose rocks.
