Experience the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory
If you want to sound like a local, refer to the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory as "The Domes." Situated in Mitchell Park, one of the first five parks established by the Milwaukee Parks Commission in 1890, the conservatory's main highlights are its three beehive-shaped glass domes. Each dome offers a unique experience and environment for visitors.
The Domes
Desert Dome
The Desert Dome houses more than 600 plants from regions around the world, including North and South America, Southern Africa, the Canary Islands, and Madagascar. As you take in the sight of cacti, dragon blood trees, Gerbera daisies, and the crown of thorns, keep an eye out for Steve, the dome's resident bearded dragon.
Tropical Dome
The Tropical Dome is particularly popular in the fall and winter, as its consistent 80-degree temperatures offer a warm refuge from the snowy conditions outside. Visitors will feel transported to a rainforest, surrounded by orchids, hibiscus, palm trees, and birds-of-paradise.
Floral Dome
The Floral Dome hosts five seasonal floral shows throughout the year. Timing your visit between November and January will let you enjoy the much-loved Holiday Show, featuring poinsettias, chrysanthemums, and amaryllis. In the spring, the dome is filled with tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, pansies, and lilies.
Visitor Experiences
For gardening enthusiasts and plant lovers, The Domes are a big hit. Winter visitors often describe it as a pleasant escape from the city's wind and snow. Many visitors express admiration for the wide variety of plants and flowers on display in each dome and appreciate the relaxing atmosphere.
