Experience the Thrill at The Wedge

Introduction

Whether you're an avid surfer, or you simply want to relax on the beach and watch the daring wave runners and body surfers, The Wedge is the perfect place to spend your afternoon. It was created in the early 1900s when a jetty was built to protect the harbor, resulting in a beach area with large waves.

Surfing at The Wedge

Now, The Wedge boasts some of the largest waves in Southern California, measuring up to 30 feet. The dramatic conditions attract some of the most skilled surfers in the country. However, it's not a place for beginner swimmers or young children due to the strong riptides and currents. If you stick to the safety of the sand, it's a great beach to enjoy.

Scenic Views and Amenities

The beach is lined with massive homes that visitors can admire. Past visitors have enjoyed watching the boats navigating in and out of the harbor. Additionally, The Wedge provides breathtaking views of the sunset and the nearby Catalina Island.

Getting to The Wedge

Located near the harbor entrance at the very end of the Balboa Peninsula, you can access The Wedge for free from nearby Balboa Beach. There is usually street parking available in nearby residential areas. However, previous travelers recommend walking or riding a bike to the beach on potentially crowded summer days to avoid the hassle of searching for a parking spot. Alternatively, you can park at the Balboa Pier and walk to The Wedge. For more information on this section of the beach, visit the website.
