Explore Assateague Island National Seashore

If you tire of tourist-filled Ocean City, you may want to consider a day trip to nearby Assateague Island National Seashore. This 37-mile-long island – which begins just south of the resort area and stretches on to Virginia – is famous for its herds of wild horses. Legend has it that these horses took over the island after surviving a Spanish shipwreck several centuries ago. However, it is more likely that they were brought to the island in the late 17th century by landowners evading fencing laws and livestock taxes. When observing the horses, remember that they are wild animals; it is unsafe to pet or feed them.

Activities to Enjoy at Assateague Island

Aside from the majestic horses, Assateague offers beautiful views of both the Atlantic Ocean and Sinepuxent Bay, making it a popular hiking destination. Other activities you can enjoy include biking, fishing, shelling, and kayaking.

Many recent visitors highlighted the park as a must-see, praising the area's natural beauty and the helpful rangers.

Getting to Assateague Island

The easiest way to reach Assateague Island is to take the Ocean Gateway Bridge to the Stephen Decatur Highway (Route 611), which heads south to the Verrazano Bridge (about a 10-mile drive). The park is accessible year-round with varying hours depending on the season.

Entrance Fees and Additional Information

Vehicle entrance to the park costs $25 for a seven-day pass. For more information, visit the National Park Service website. Note that the National Park Service manages the Maryland district, also known as Assateague Island National Seashore. Two miles of the Maryland district are managed by the state, designated as Assateague State Park. The Virginia district falls under the management of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Separate entrance fees apply if you wish to visit multiple areas.
