Hoyt Arboretum

Introduction

Founded in 1928, the 189-acre Hoyt Arboretum features over 170 different tree families and 6,000 individual trees. The species represented originate from every continent except Antarctica. Visitors can either explore the arboretum on their own via the park's 12 miles of trails or take a guided tour.

There are also adult classes on everything from forest bathing to mushroom identification walks, with prices ranging from $15 to $30.

Location and Access

The arboretum is situated within Washington Park, southwest of the Portland Japanese Garden and north of the zoo.

Parking

Parking costs $2 per hour or $8 for the day, although it is limited. Visitors may prefer taking the MAX Blue or Red line to the Washington Park stop.

Biking

It is also possible to bike to the arboretum, but note that even regular bike commuters find it a steep ascent.

Admission

The Hoyt Arboretum is free for all visitors. During summer weekends, there are free guided tours. Check the events calendar on the Arboretum's website for more details.

Hours

The arboretum operates daily year-round from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The visitor center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
