Overview of Rancho San Rafael Park

Diverse types of landscape – including wetland habitats, pasture grasses, and sagebrush, as well as mowed lawn – make up the nearly 600 acres of Rancho San Rafael Park in northern Reno.

Facilities and Attractions

Southern Section

The southern portion of the park boasts a variety of facilities such as volleyball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, a dog park, and numerous hiking and biking trails. This section is also home to the Wilbur D. May Museum, renowned for its eclectic collection of artifacts like African tribal masks, Chinese pottery, Egyptian tomb relics, Japanese swords, and Polynesian carvings. Other intriguing exhibits include firearms, glasswork, and taxidermy.

Northern Section

Although the northern section of the park remains largely undeveloped, it features hiking trails, a disc golf course, and softball fields.

Arboretum and Botanical Garden

The park also includes a well-maintained arboretum and botanical garden, adding to its diverse range of attractions.

Events and Activities

Throughout the year, Rancho San Rafael Park hosts numerous events, such as the Great Reno Balloon Race and Dragon Lights Reno. Parkgoers consistently praise the area as a delightful place for walking (with or without a dog) or enjoying a picnic. They consider it well-maintained and full of engaging activities. Although it is worth visiting at any time of year, some visitors suggest that fall, when the leaves change color, is the most picturesque time to go.

Wilbur D. May Museum

Visitors to the museum often comment on its small size but find it worth visiting due to its fascinating collection of curiosities.

Visitor Information

Access to the park is free, with no parking or entrance fees. However, there are admission costs for the museum, which are $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children aged 3 to 17. The museum operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The park itself is generally open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Picnic Areas and Event Rentals

The park’s picnic areas can be reserved for a fee, which varies depending on the location and group size. Additionally, the arboretum gardens are available for wedding rentals. For more details, visit Washoe County’s website.
