Overview of the Western Edge Park
On the western edge of The Mission, this 16-acre park is billed as one of the city’s most popular attractions. It offers stunning views of the San Francisco skyline and beyond, alongside its ample green space. On sunny days, families flock here to picnic on the grassy lawns shaded by palm trees. In addition, the park features a playground, two off-leash dog play areas, and several sports courts.
Picnic Recommendations
If you’re hoping to bring a picnic to enjoy at the park, experts suggest stopping by Tartine Bakery, Rhea’s Market & Deli, and Nopalito for some delicious eats.
Historical Background
Interestingly, the park is situated on land that was once a Jewish cemetery. In 1905, the city purchased the land and created the park. A year later, it became a refugee camp for hundreds of residents who lost their homes in the historic 1906 earthquake and fire.
Current Attractions
Although the park can sometimes become crowded, it offers delightful views and is a great place to lounge or people-watch.
Hours and Tickets
The park welcomes visitors from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and entry is free. The Muni metro J-Church line sits on the park’s western perimeter. For more information about its facilities, visit the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department website.
