Introduction to Papago Park's Hole in the Rock

Papago Park features several hikes, with perhaps the most distinctive being the Hole in the Rock. This hike is nestled among the red butte formations of the park and, although it is a short 0.3 miles round trip, it offers a spectacular experience. The hike involves ascending 200 feet of steps to reach a dramatic lookout point. From there, visitors can enjoy views of nearby lagoons and the distant cityscape. Historians believe that the Hohokam civilization, which once inhabited the area, may have used the rock formation to track the position of the sun through a hole in the top of the rock.

Reasons to Visit Hole in the Rock

The primary draw of this hike is the stunning views from the summit. It's particularly rewarding to time your hike around sunset. Although the viewpoint is often busy with visitors, the area is well-equipped with amenities such as public restrooms, picnic areas, and a nearby parking lot. Additionally, the trail is conveniently located just half a mile from the Phoenix Zoo.

Hours

Papago Park’s gated roadways and parking areas have varying opening hours, but they are generally open from sunrise until sunset or 7 p.m., whichever comes earlier. Trails, however, remain open until 11 p.m. daily. Admission to the park is free.
