Introduction
Bearfence Mountain offers two distinct hiking routes, the Bearfence Rock Scramble Hike and the Bearfence Viewpoint Hike. Both trails culminate in a stunning panoramic view of the Virginia Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley. Visitors often recommend the rock scramble route for its added challenge and thrill.
Bearfence Rock Scramble Hike
This route is known for being more demanding but equally more rewarding. The hike spans approximately 1.5 miles and includes an elevation gain of over 300 feet. It's not advisable for young children and becomes considerably more hazardous in icy conditions.
Difficulty Level
Due to its challenging nature, this hike is better suited for experienced hikers looking for an adventurous outing.
Bearfence Viewpoint Hike
For those seeking an easier alternative, the Bearfence Viewpoint Hike is an ideal choice. This hike is about a mile long and skips the rock scrambling, still rewarding hikers with the same breathtaking views.
Hike Characteristics
This simpler route is perfect for families and those not comfortable with more strenuous activities.
Accessibility
Both hikes begin with a short connector on the Appalachian Trail. The Bearfence Mountain trailhead is conveniently located between Thornton Gap Entrance Station and the Swift Run Gap Entrance Station, approximately 5.5 miles south of the Harry F. Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center on Skyline Drive. The trailhead features its own parking area and is accessible year-round to those who have paid the National Park's entrance fee.
Additional Information
Pets are not permitted on either of the Bearfence Mountain hikes. For further details, visit the National Park Service website.
