Mary's Rock Trail: An Adventurous Hiking Experience
Located in the Thornton Gap Area of Shenandoah National Park, Mary's Rock Trail provides hikers with a scenic adventure to the summit of Mary's Rock Mountain. This trail offers stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain. As you hike, be mindful of the fragile plants growing along the rocky path.
Trail Options and Difficulty
The park offers two routes to the summit: the Mary's Rock Summit Hike and the Mary's Rock Summit Hike – Alternate. Both are moderately difficult and involve sections of the Appalachian Trail. The primary route spans approximately 4 miles, while the alternative option is about 3 miles in length. Hikers should plan for roughly three to four hours to complete the trek. While the trail can be challenging, past hikers agree that the effort is worthwhile for the breathtaking views at the summit.
Recommended Routes
Most past visitors recommend the primary route, which begins at the Panorama parking lot, just north of the Thornton Gap entrance. The alternative route starts at the Meadow Spring parking area, located farther south along Skyline Drive, and requires hikers to switch trails.
Accessibility and Additional Information
Both routes are accessible year-round and are free with park admission. For additional information about Mary's Rock Summit Trail, visit the official National Park Service website.
