Mount Mansfield: Vermont's Highest Peak
Mount Mansfield stands as Vermont's highest mountain and is one of the state's rare sites where visitors can experience arctic tundra. This peak, integral to the Stowe Mountain Resort, boasts numerous skiing and hiking trails suitable for various skill levels.
Hiking Trails on Mount Mansfield
One accessible option is a 2.5-mile out-and-back hike from the Toll Road, which provides fantastic views. For a lengthier trek, the Sunset Ridge Trail extends about 6.5 miles out and back, renowned for its exceptional vistas. However, this trail is quite exposed, making it risky during bad weather or high winds. Winter conditions can also be treacherous, with heavy snowfall and potential whiteout scenarios above the tree line, so hikers should be well-prepared and experienced in winter hiking when tackling the upper portions during colder months.
Visitors' Opinions and Recommendations
Recent visitors have lauded the spectacular Auto Toll Road, which is accessible in warmer months, as well as the winter gondola ride. Travelers have highlighted the stunning views and the wide array of hikes appropriate for all fitness levels. To avoid the peak's frequent crowding, some visitors recommend arriving early.
Getting to Mount Mansfield
Mount Mansfield is situated about 10 miles northwest of Stowe on Route 108. During winter, Green Mountain Transit offers free shuttle service between Stowe Village and Stowe Mountain Resort. However, driving or taking a taxi is necessary for direct access to the hiking trails.
Alternative Access Options
Those not keen on hiking can opt to drive the Auto Toll Road from late May to mid-October. The base price is $26, and the road is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. In addition, from late December through early April, visitors can access the peak via the gondola. Gondola admission fees are $37 for adults and $26 for children aged 5 to 12. The gondola operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on weekends from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on Stowe Mountain Resort’s website.
