The Real von Trapp Family and Their Legacy

As avid fans of "The Sound of Music" already know, the real von Trapp family was a musical troupe that toured the world after their escape from Salzburg, Austria, in 1938. As the family business became lucrative, the von Trapps purchased a small farmhouse in Stowe and settled down to live amid the mountains yet again. Over time, the farmhouse grew into a large resort with cross-country ski trails, mountain biking paths, tennis courts, and more.

The Trapp Family Lodge Today

The now expansive lodge mainly serves as a ski retreat, but the property's hiking trails and horse-drawn carriage rides are equally popular. "The Sound of Music" fans and von Trapp aficionados recommend partaking in a history tour of the lodge to get an overview of the family's history.

Location and Accessibility

Trapp Family Lodge is situated approximately 4 miles west of downtown Stowe and 8 miles southeast of Stowe Mountain Resort. The lodge is free to visit year-round but is not accessible via public transportation.

Activities and Tours

One-hour history tours are offered at varying times and require reservations, which can be made online or by phone. Maple sugaring tours, which walk visitors through the process of harvesting and making maple syrup, are also available seasonally and require reservations. Both tours cost $18 per adult not staying on-site and $5 for children between 6 and 12. Both tours are included in the fees for resort guests.
