Experience the Historic Tampa Theatre
A Step Back in Time
Even if visiting for reasons other than a film screening or performance, a stop at the ornate Tampa Theatre comes highly recommended. Built in 1926, this venue was once considered one of the nation's most elaborate theaters. Designed by architect John Eberson, its interior showcases a 1,400-pipe Wurlitzer organ and is adorned to resemble a garden with flowering vines and gargoyles. Additionally, these elements contribute to the theater’s unique ambiance, further enhanced by "twinkling stars" (tiny light bulbs) on the ceiling, simulating a night sky.
Depending on the timing of your visit, you might catch a film (either a new release or a classic) or a live event such as a concert. Visitors often describe their experience at the Tampa Theatre as akin to stepping back in time. However, some note that the 1920s-era seats can be somewhat uncomfortable and that lines at the concession stands may be long.
Location and Logistics
The Tampa Theatre is located in downtown Tampa, accessible from Interstates 275 and 4, and is just two blocks from the Tampa Riverwalk. The box office operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and opens when doors open for the first show on evenings and weekends. Weekday film screenings commence at 7:30 p.m., with weekend movie times varying. Film ticket prices start at $10 for adults and $8 for children aged 3 to 12. Ticket prices for live performances vary by event.
Tours
If you cannot attend a show, consider taking a tour instead. The Tampa Theatre offers a 90-minute "Balcony to Backstage" tour, which includes a demonstration of the Wurlitzer theater organ and insight into the stories, art, and architecture that have earned this movie palace a spot on the National Register of Historic Places and a designation as a Tampa historic landmark. Tours are held twice a month. Adult tickets cost $10, while children's tickets (ages 2 to 12) are $8. Be sure to check the theater's website for show times and to book a tour in advance, as they often sell out.
