Seneca Falls: The Birthplace of Women's Rights

Seneca Falls, often referred to as the "birthplace of women's rights," is a significant historical site. It was here in this New York town that the first women's rights convention in the United States was held in July 1848. This convention, known as the Seneca Falls Convention, aimed to discuss the social, civil, and religious conditions and rights of women.

Women's Rights National Historical Park

Located just off of highway U.S. 20 in Seneca Falls, the Women's Rights National Historical Park commemorates the 1848 convention. It also serves as a reminder that the fight for women's rights is ongoing. The park includes four major properties:

Wesleyan Methodist Church

This was the site of the convention in July 1848, chosen for its central location known to all the organizers.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton House

Former home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, an organizer of the convention and co-author of the Declaration of Sentiments, the initial declaration of women's rights. Visitors can only view the house from the outside.

M'Clintock House

Mary Ann M'Clintock hosted a planning session for the convention here, and the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted in this house. The grounds are open, but the interior is not accessible to the public.

Hunt House

Jane Hunt hosted a gathering here in honor of Lucretia Mott. It was at this gathering that the idea of a women's rights convention was first conceived. Visitors can explore the grounds, but the house interiors are not open to the public.

Additional Attractions at the Park

Declaration Park and Waterwall

The waterwall features the entire Declaration of Sentiments inscribed across the installation with water flowing from it.

Visitor Center

The center includes two floors of exhibits dedicated to the 1848 convention.

Visitor Activities and Events

Travelers seeking a deeper understanding can attend 30-minute outdoor ranger talks, given daily. The schedule varies by topic, number of talks, and time of day. Check the park's website for current dates and times.

For a unique experience, consider visiting during the annual Convention Days each July. This event offers a variety of programming centered on the Seneca convention. Other special events, talks, and programs may also be available throughout the year.

Visitor Recommendations

Previous visitors have praised the park as a must-see for its historical significance. Many travelers also commend the small museum and the informative ranger talks.
