Discover the Historic Mission Point Lighthouse

A Glimpse into the Past

Experience a touch of history and a relaxing getaway at the Mission Point Lighthouse, a charming 19th-century beacon on the tip of Old Mission Peninsula. Nestled at the water's edge and framed by lush trees, the lighthouse offers visitors a scenic escape. Built in the late 1800s after a shipwreck on a nearby coral reef, this picturesque site remains a draw due to its stunning location and historic appeal. A fence separates the beach from the lighthouse, and a pathway provides access to the water, making it an inviting spot for visitors.

Visitor Experience

Self-Guided Tours and Views

Today, the Mission Point Lighthouse is on the National and State Historic Register. Visitors can take self-guided tours and climb to the top for breathtaking views of Grand Traverse Bay. Additionally, a small beach with calm waters and nearby hiking trails offer more scenic views and exploration opportunities. Recent visitors have described the lighthouse as "cute," with the surrounding beach and lake views as "absolutely beautiful." The drive to the lighthouse is also notably spectacular, featuring wineries, estates, and more attractions along the way.

Practical Information

It's important to note that the Mission Point Lighthouse can become quite crowded, particularly in small areas, especially if the tide is high, limiting beach space. Inside the lighthouse, travelers are fascinated by the historical information provided. A modest fee is required to climb to the top for those interested in a higher vantage point.

Seasonal Hours and Admission

The Mission Point Lighthouse operates seasonally from May to November. Between May and October, it's open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while November visitors are welcome from noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission to the park and the lighthouse's first floor is free. However, access to the second floor and the top requires a fee of $5 for adults (ages 13 and up) and $2 for children (ages 6 to 12). Children aged 5 and under can enter for free.

Location and Additional Information

You can find the Mission Point Lighthouse at the northernmost point of Old Mission Peninsula, just over 19 miles north of Traverse City. For further details, visit the lighthouse's website.
