Experience Jazz in the Garden

If you're traveling in the summertime and find yourself in D.C. on a Friday evening, make sure to visit the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden for its annual Jazz in the Garden concert series. The performances, running from late May to late July, start at 6 p.m. Alternatively, you can enjoy free Sunday afternoon concerts in the West Building throughout the year.

Exploring the National Gallery of Art

For those not visiting during the summer—or anyone who loves art—spend some time at the National Gallery of Art. The museum comprises two main buildings:

East Building

The East Building is home to the gallery's more modern works, featuring renowned artists like Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko.

West Building

The West Building contains older works, showcasing pieces from artists such as Sandro Botticelli and Claude Monet.

Must-See Highlights

This museum offers plenty to fill an entire afternoon. Don't miss the rooftop terrace for panoramic city views and a photo op with a giant blue rooster. Additionally, the gallery houses the only Leonardo da Vinci oil painting on permanent exhibition in the U.S.

Visitor Tips

The National Gallery of Art is quite large, featuring an expansive collection. To make the most of your visit, pace yourself and consider grabbing a coffee, gelato, or lunch at one of the gallery's five bars and cafes.

Hours and Admission

The museum welcomes visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Additionally, there are various free self-guided, guided, and audio tours available.

Getting There

You can reach the National Gallery of Art by taking the Metro's Yellow or Green lines to the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter station. Capital Bikeshare also has a station next to the East Building.
