Overview of the United States National Arboretum
Located northeast of downtown Washington, D.C., the United States National Arboretum offers visitors beautiful outdoor spaces to explore. The arboretum is home to several outdoor collections, including dogwoods, azaleas, and magnolias. However, the primary attractions for most travelers are the National Capitol Columns and the bonsai collection.
The National Capitol Columns
Constructed in 1828, the National Capitol Columns originally decorated the Capitol building until 1958. They were moved to the arboretum in the 1980s. Today, these columns provide an excellent backdrop for photos or a relaxing picnic.
The National Bonsai & Penjing Museum
The bonsai trees are housed in the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, which features an impressive collection of 300 miniature trees. The staff members regularly rotate the trees through the museum's three pavilions and special exhibits gallery, ensuring a fresh display for visitors.
Visitor Experience
The U.S. National Arboretum's bonsai collection and Capitol Columns are key attractions. To fully enjoy the arboretum, it's recommended to wear comfortable sneakers and plan a visit during the spring or summer when the gardens are in peak bloom. The arboretum features winding walking trails that offer a delightful experience amidst nature.

The arboretum can be accessed via entrances on R Street Northeast and New York Avenue Northeast. Visitors can reach the grounds by bike, car, or the B2 bus route. It's important to note that the R Street entrance is closed to cars after 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and all day Friday to Sunday, although it remains open to pedestrians and cyclists.
