Steamboat Geyser: The World's Tallest Active Geyser

Location and Features

Steamboat Geyser, renowned as the world's tallest active geyser, is situated in the Norris Geyser Basin, away from the famous Old Faithful. This geyser is known for its spectacular eruptions, shooting water over 300 feet into the air, which can last anywhere from three to 40 minutes. Although park scientists cannot predict the next eruption, it has become more active since 2018, with around a dozen eruptions each year. Visitors can access Steamboat Geyser by taking the 1.5-mile Back Basin trail and boardwalk, located near Cistern Spring.

Visitor Reviews

Due to its unpredictable eruption schedule, Steamboat Geyser receives mixed reviews from visitors. Those fortunate enough to witness a major eruption describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, those who miss the spectacle still find the site interesting, albeit noting the presence of dead vegetation in the inhospitable zone around the geyser. Despite the geyser's activity, the area remains busy with visitors.

Nearby Amenities

The Steamboat Geyser is part of the Norris Geyser Basin thermal area, located 12 miles west of Canyon Village. Canyon Village offers various services, including camping, lodging, dining, and supplies such as gas and water. The park's admission fee covers access to this area, which features a parking lot equipped with vault toilets and a small museum that operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Memorial Day until mid-October.

Safety Precautions

As with all geothermal features in Yellowstone, hikers must remain on marked trails and boardwalks and keep an eye on children, with pets prohibited. The areas can produce toxic gases, so visitors who feel unwell should leave the area and notify a park ranger.
