Sand Beach: A Unique Coastal Experience
Sand Beach is known for its sharp shells and consistently cold water, which rarely warms above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these conditions, it remains the most favored of the park's three beaches. The attraction? The breathtaking scenery. Nestled between two solid pink granite walls and fringed with towering evergreens, the roughly 900-foot shoreline offers a unique and picturesque coastal experience unlike any other beach.
Enjoying the Scenic Views
When not taking in the views directly from the shore, hiking enthusiasts can opt for the Great Head Trail to gain an even more impressive vantage point. This trail begins at the eastern end of the beach, opposite the parking lot. As you ascend the granite steps at the base of the cliffs, you'll be rewarded with spectacular sights once you reach the top. From this elevated position, you can marvel at the beach below and catch sights of the Beehive mountain, a challenging trail that attracts seasoned hikers.
Know Before You Go
Sand Beach is located off Park Loop Road, just south of the east entrance pay station. There is a parking lot available off Park Loop Road adjacent to the beach's changing rooms. However, during the summer, the lot tends to fill up by 9 a.m., so it might be wise to consider taking the free Island Explorer shuttle to avoid parking hassles. Be prepared to descend a lengthy stairway to access the beach. Notably, Sand Beach is accessible year-round, offering visitors the chance to enjoy its unique landscape throughout all seasons.
