History and Legacy
Kleinhans Music Hall was the dying wish of both Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans, who passed away within three months of each other in 1934. The couple had made a small fortune from their high-end men's clothing store and bequeathed funds in their will "to erect a suitable music hall … for the use, enjoyment, and benefit of the people of the City of Buffalo."
Opening and Notable Performances
Just about six years later in 1940, the Kleinhans Music Hall debuted with a concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic and still serves as the orchestra’s primary performance venue.
Renowned Performers
Since its opening, a number of big names have performed in the hall's three auditoriums, with acts ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Gladys Knight. The venue also regularly hosts lectures, readings, comedy shows, and films covering a variety of subjects.
Acoustics and Design
The hall is highly regarded for its acoustics – it's considered by some to be one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the world. The sound quality and building design are two details repeatedly highlighted by recent visitors, with some even describing the acoustics as “divine.”
Visitor Information
Parking
Parking seemed to be the only gripe among recent performance-goers: reviewers recommend allowing enough time before a show to find street parking nearby as the on-site lot fills up quickly.
Location and Additional Information
Ticket prices and showtimes vary. You'll find the music hall located on the aptly named Symphony Circle, just north of the city center. For more information about upcoming performances, visit the music hall's Kleinhans Music Hall website.
