Discover Cape May: Rail-Biking Adventure
Experience a Unique Ride
Before or after your ride, visit the Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey, which opened in 2020 at Lafayette and Franklin streets. This area is a noted African-American neighborhood and a hub of abolitionist activity during the Civil War era. – Marjorie Preston
There's a distinctive way to explore Cape May – through pedal-powered rail-biking. Revolution Rail, in collaboration with Cape Seashore Lines, launched this activity in New Jersey in 2020. The 4-mile round-trip takes you through the Nature Conservancy's Garrett Family Preserve.
Starting Point
Your journey begins at the Welcome Center on Lafayette Street in downtown Cape May. Due to limited parking space in the summer, it is advisable to arrive early. From there, you'll embark on a leisurely ride through the wild salt marshes of Cape Island Creek.
Wildlife Sightings
During the expedition, you might spot migrating songbirds, foraging raptors, and essential pollinators like bumblebees and monarch butterflies. The round trip along these historic rail lines takes approximately 1.5 hours. This activity is open to individuals of all ages, though it's recommended to check the website FAQs for details on physical requirements and safety measures for infants and children. Tours proceed rain or shine, barring severe weather conditions.
Pricing Details
Quad bikes, seating up to four people, start at $160 per trip. Tandem bikes, accommodating one to two people, have a starting price of $90. Veterans and active-duty military personnel with ID can avail a 10% discount. Daily rides are scheduled at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. During the peak summer season, early risers can also join at 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. For a special touch, consider the Full Moon or Twilight run, where participants use glow sticks and ride along illuminated tracks, concluding with a campfire and s'mores.
