The Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park stands as the oldest and largest of America's Civil War parks, straddling the Tennessee-Georgia border. This expansive park features more than 600 monuments and markers that guide visitors through the pivotal battles that took place here. Chattanooga's strategic significance during the Civil War stemmed from its railroads, natural resources, and location. Intense battles occurred in various areas of Chickamauga and Chattanooga in 1863, witnessing both Union and Confederate victories and losses. The eventual Union triumph pushed Confederate forces back into Georgia, dubbing Chattanooga the "Gateway to the Deep South" and facilitating further Union advances into the Confederate-held Southern states.

Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center

Situated in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, about 10 miles south of downtown Chattanooga, this center serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the park. It offers various interpretive exhibits and a comprehensive understanding of the battles.

Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center

Located approximately 8.5 miles south of downtown Chattanooga, this center is convenient for visitors preferring to stay in Tennessee. It is near popular attractions like Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway. One notable feature is a 13-by-30 painting by James Walker titled "The Battle of Lookout Mountain." Nearby Point Park features scenic views, battery positions, walking trails, monuments, and educational displays.

Tickets

Hours

The park grounds are open from sunrise to sunset. Both the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center and Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center operate daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Point Park's main entrance also opens at 8:30 a.m. All units are closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
