Introduction to Mather Point
Located just steps from the main visitor center, Mather Point is often the first view many visitors have of the Grand Canyon. Travelers can easily access this lookout by taking a brief, five-minute walk from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. The fenced overlook at Mather Point offers exceptional vistas of the rugged cliffs and trails below. When weather conditions are favorable, visibility can extend over 30 miles to the east and 60 miles to the west. Named in honor of Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, Mather Point is also a popular spot to watch the sunrise and sunset over the canyon.
