Exploring the Indiana War Memorial Plaza

The Indiana War Memorial Plaza, an historic district, is home to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Indiana World War Memorial and Museum, University Park, American Legion Mall, Veteran's Memorial Plaza, and the USS Indianapolis CA35 Memorial. In total, this district spans 25 acres dedicated to honoring veterans. If you appreciate the National Mall in Washington, D.C., you will likely enjoy spending time here. Notably, Indianapolis ranks second only to D.C. in the number of monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans.

The Shrine Room

Occupying 30,000 square feet, the Indiana War Memorial Museum is a must-visit, particularly the Shrine Room. Described by visitors as "breathtaking" and "peaceful," the Shrine Room honors the fallen soldiers of World War I. The room features materials sourced globally, symbolizing the worldwide effort to end the war.

Main Floor Exhibits

The main floor of the museum chronicles the history of Indiana's veterans, from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Key exhibits include the USS Indianapolis gallery, military firearms, uniforms, and an AH-1 Cobra Attack Helicopter. Visitors are often amazed by the expansive interior and the extensive collection of memorabilia displayed. The care and respect given to all veterans through these exhibits receive widespread commendation from visitors.
