Named after a French pirate who helped Gen. Andrew Jackson defend New Orleans during the War of 1812, the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve consists of six sites throughout southern Louisiana. New Orleans is home to several of these sites.

French Quarter Visitor Center

The French Quarter Visitor Center highlights the history and traditions of the lower Mississippi River Delta region through exhibits and films. From Tuesday through Saturday, the center hosts a ranger history talk where visitors can learn more about the area. Additionally, the center also serves as the location for the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, dedicated to sharing the origins and evolution of jazz.

The French Quarter Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Chalmette Battlefield

Chalmette Battlefield, the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, is located just 6 miles east of New Orleans along the Mississippi River. Although the battle took place after the War of 1812 had technically ended (due to delayed communication), it remains a significant historical site. Visitors can explore the battlefield, which features historical markers that trace the events of the Battle of New Orleans. There is also a national cemetery on the grounds where visitors can pay their respects to those who fell.

After touring Chalmette Battlefield, visitors can head to the Barataria Preserve. Although the preserve is located several miles southwest of the battlefield, both sites are operated and maintained by the National Park Service. At the preserve, you can explore numerous swamps and bayous and might catch a glimpse of an alligator or two. The park also hosts various cultural events throughout the year.

Hours and Pricing

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Chalmette Battlefield welcome aspiring historians and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. However, the hours of operation vary depending on the specific area of the park you wish to visit. The battlefield is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the park and battlefield is free.

Getting There

The battlefield isn't easily accessible by public transportation. If you don't have your own vehicle, you can take the Creole Queen paddlewheeler. This 2.5-hour narrated cruise departs from the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk on Poydras Street and disembarks at the battlefield. Round-trip tickets for adults cost $47, while children aged 6 to 12 can ride for $20. You also have the option to purchase lunch and beverages for an additional price.

While the cruise is convenient for those without a car, it can be somewhat limiting: Without a car, you will only have access to the battlefield, the Malus-Beauregard House, and the Chalmette Monument. If you want to explore more of Jean Lafitte's other attractions, having your own vehicle is advised.

For more information, check out the park's official website.
