Exploring the Garden District
Take a guided or self-led tour of the Garden District, located a little less than 3 miles southwest of the French Quarter. This area offers a peek at some of the city's most beautiful homes. The peacefulness of this historic residential neighborhood, a National Historic Landmark, provides a welcome respite from the bustle of Bourbon Street.
Where to Refuel
If you need to refuel after meandering the leafy streets of the neighborhood, head to the intersection of Prytania Street and Washington Avenue. This area features shops, cafes, and the famous Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. Directly across from the cemetery, you'll find Commander's Palace restaurant, one of the city's most well-regarded and refined dining establishments, which is also one of the busiest.
Getting There
Stretching from St. Charles Avenue to Magazine Street and from Jackson Avenue to Louisiana Avenue, the Garden District is easily accessible via the St. Charles Avenue streetcar, the Magazine Street bus, or via carriage.
