Introduction to Huntington Beach State Park

A peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the hectic main beaches, Huntington Beach State Park features a 3-mile beach, hiking and bike trails, picnic areas, a nature center, and nearly 200 tent and RV campsites. The salt marsh that lives under the causeway entry road is a huge draw for bird-watchers. In fact, the park is considered one of the best birding sites in the Southeast.

Historical Significance

Atalaya Castle

In addition, the historic Moorish-style Atalaya Castle is located here. A National Historic Landmark, Atalaya offers a fascinating look into the lives of Archer Milton Huntington, a 20th-century industrialist and Hispanic scholar, and his wife, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, who wintered here. The Huntington family also founded nearby Brookgreen Gardens. The popular Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival is held at the castle each September.

Visitor Activities

Bird-Watching and Wildlife

The natural beauty of Huntington captivates visitors. Fishing off the jetty and from the sands of the wide, flat beach is a popular activity, as is bird- and gator-watching, according to recent reviews. The park also offers various nature programs that focus on the area's turtles and other plant and animal species.

Camping and Facilities

With nearly 200 tent and RV campsites available, the park offers plenty of options for overnight stays. Picnic areas and a nature center are also accessible for visitors who prefer day trips.

Location

Huntington Beach State Park is conveniently located about 17 miles south of Myrtle Beach State Park.
