The Loretto Chapel

The Loretto Chapel is renowned for its so-called miraculous staircase. This unique staircase makes two 360-degree turns while ascending 22 feet to the choir loft. Legend has it that a mysterious carpenter constructed the staircase after the chapel's completion in 1878. Remarkably, the carpenter used wooden pegs instead of nails, and the staircase appears to have no visible means of support. Other notable features of this neo-Gothic church, which measures just 25 by 75 feet, include trefoil arches, buttresses, and stained-glass windows imported from France.

Visitor Experience

Visitors often express awe at the remarkable staircase and enjoy learning about its history. However, some have mentioned that the chapel's small size and $5 admission fee may not make it worth a visit, especially considering the nearby churches that offer free entry.

Hours

Situated on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, the chapel is open daily (except on Christmas) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Due to its popularity as a venue for weddings and private events, accessibility might be limited during these hours.

Tickets

Admission costs $5 for adults and $3 for youths aged 7 to 17, while children 6 and under can enter for free. It is recommended to check the chapel's website prior to visiting to confirm it is open to the public. Additionally, a gift shop on-site offers a variety of souvenirs and religious items.
