The Tunnel Log: A Unique Landmark in the Giant Forest
Historical Background
The Tunnel Log, situated along the Crescent Meadow Road in the Giant Forest, provides a captivating photo-op for park visitors. This magnificent tree fell across the road in 1937. It measured 275 feet in height and 21 feet in diameter at its base when it toppled. The following year, a tunnel was cut through the trunk, attracting numerous visitors ever since. According to the National Park Service, the tree is estimated to be at least 2,000 years old.
Visiting Tips
Recent travelers suggest visiting early in the day to avoid large crowds of people posing in front of, beneath, and even atop the Tunnel Log. The tunnel itself is 17 feet wide, allowing passage only for vehicles shorter than 8 feet in height; larger vehicles have the option to use a nearby bypass lane. Access to the Tunnel Log is covered by the park admission fee. For additional information, you can visit the NPS website.
