Ophir Pass: A Prime Off-Road Adventure

Located just east of the town of Ophir, about 15 miles south of Telluride, this dirt road is a popular spot for off-roading enthusiasts. Known as Forest Road #630, the trail extends approximately 10 miles between Colorado State Highway 145 and U.S. Route 550, reaching an altitude of 11,789 feet. Although the road is open to all vehicles, a high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended. Off-road vehicles are prohibited between Highway 145 through the town of Ophir, so if you're trailing an unlicensed ATV from Telluride, you will start your off-road journey about a quarter-mile east of Ophir. Remember, vehicles traveling up the pass have the right of way.

Trail Experience

Visitors have described this off-roading trail as "exciting" and "epic." The path offers stunning views of the San Juan Mountains, although some sections can be challenging, especially for novice drivers. A rocky shelf section to the west of the summit is particularly difficult for inexperienced mountain drivers. To avoid this challenging section, consider entering the pass from Highway 550 and driving east to west, then turning around at the summit to bypass the most difficult spot.

Vehicle Rentals and Tours

Jeeps and other four-wheel-drive vehicles can be rented from local companies such as Cliffhanger Jeep Rental or Diff. For those who prefer to leave the driving to professionals, Telluride Outside offers an ATV tour of Ophir Pass, costing $125 per adult and $115 for children. Previous travelers have commended the "safe," "professional," and "knowledgeable" drivers as well as the breathtaking views provided on the guided tour.

Seasonal Accessibility

Mountain snow renders the road impassable for most of the year, usually opening in June for the summer season. For road-closure updates, check the San Miguel County website. For more information, visit the Ophir Pass page on the Visit Telluride website or the U.S. Forest Service website.
